How do you manage expectations about placements?
I’ve always been fascinated by this. Each studio director, instructor and coach seem to handle it differently. I’ve seen individual placement emails, group emails, and at the college level, I’ve even seen teams post their new roster on the Instagram page, by way of informing potential recruits!
The last way notwithstanding, there are benefits and drawbacks to each method. I’ve long been a fan of a personal conversation in advance, if there will be a big shock or upset:
This team is dissolving for next season, so students will be separated and in new groups
A student needs to compete in a lower skill level for the next season than they have been ~ this is typically seen when aging up into a new bracket.
Coaches have so much influence, that a meaningful heart to heart that reinforces the student’s value on the team and asset in their new placement goes a long way!
